There are nineteen schools in the sub-Branch's charter area, four high schools and fifteen primary schools. The sub-Branch has a schools' liaison officer who advises schools of upcoming events and co-ordinates school involvement in sub-Branch activities. The following educational activities are carried out each year:
NSW RSL " Australia My Country" Competition- Initiated by the RSL State Branch and the Teachers RSL Sub-Branch.. Miranda RSL Sub-Branch co-ordinates the competition in conjunction with local School Principals. Students in years 3 to 10 are eligible to enter the competition.
Categories include, Written Composition, Poetry, Non Written and Electronic Media. The competition closes in May each year. Initial judging is carried out by a team from the Sub-Branch with selected entries being forwarded to the RSL NSW Branch for final judging with other entries from around NSW.
Winners of each category receive a certificate and a monetary reward which is presented at a special ceremony by the Governor at Government House Sydney.
Students from our local schools have had excellent results in the competition. Some recent winners have had the opportunity to recite their poems at the ANZAC Day dawn ceremony at Miranda.
Year 10 Schools Modern History Symposium- Held in August each year at the RSL Club. This concept started in 1977 and is based on enquiry learning where students learn first hand from those who were in historical events.
The format has undergone changes over the years. Today the symposium has up to five veterans who deliver a talk on their war time experiences. Topics cover periods from the two World Wars, Korea , Vietnam and more recent conflict. Students are encouraged to ask questions to further their understanding.
An excellent range of wartime memorabilia items are displayed for students. In many respects, these symposiums are our most important educational programme. Miranda RSL Sub -Branch is the only Sub-Branch in NSW to conduct these symposiums.
End of Year Awards- Miranda RSL Awards are provided to schools for presentation at their Annual presentation awards ceremony. The awards are monetary and recipients are nominated by the schools. Sub-Branch committee members present the awards at schools' annual presentation nights.
Book Presentation Evenings- In June each year a book presentation evening is held at the RSL Club where representatives from the charter schools are presented with a pack of books which had been placed on the Central Road Cenotaph on ANZAC Day.
The books by donors are subsidised by the sub-Branch. The books have ANZAC themes and are placed in the school libraries for students to borrow.
Commemoration- At the invitation of our Charter Schools, Committee members and volunteers visit local schools in the days before ANZAC day to speak at the schools ANZAC service. This is another important sub-Branch activity to ensure the ANZAC tradition continues.
